Caroline Schauer

Oils

Caroline was born in England where she was inspired at a young age by wonderful, encouraging art teachers in elementary school. After completing her basic schooling, Caroline attended Harrow School of Art for almost two years before moving to Canada. Her pre-diploma training included drawing, painting, silk screening, 3-dimensional experimentation and the study of art history and psychology: her goal was to become a textile designer. Drawing training included weekly trips to London’s Victoria & Albert Museum where the afternoon was spent drawing various museum pieces.

At the age of 17, Caroline and her family immigrated to Grande Prairie, Alberta, where she and her mother opened an art and hobby shop. After living for three years in Grande Prairie, Caroline moved to Hawaii where she married and began a family so paint brushes and pencils were set aside for many years.Time was spent living in Green River, WY and also Vancouver, B.C. then back to Hawaii until coming to Whatcom County in 1974. Although many years were spent without opportunity to paint, Caroline found a creative outlet here through floral design. She began painting again in 2001. Taking oil painting classes and workshops, and participating in a monthly critique group, help her continue to grow as an artist. Caroline now lives in Ferndale with her husband Hans.

Artist's Statement

I have loved to paint ever since receiving my first “paint by number” as a child! Throughout school, art was my favorite subject as I was challenged to explore and apply various styles. The development of my drawing skills has been of utmost importance to me in my work.

I began painting again in 2001 and oils have become my joy as an artist! I love the “buttery” texture and blending capacities of oils, as well as the vibrant colors.  Rather than get caught up in detail, I strive to express the essence of the beauty of God’s creation and let my paintings to be free flowing. I realize that I will never really “arrive” as an artist but I hope to always keep growing and to express the beauty of life to others through my paintings.
